Dennis Brown
As 'Lips For Wine' was being
recorded by what would become known as 'One of Reggae's greatest voices
aside from Bob Marley,' its more than likely all present had some idea
of the legacy Dennis Brown would leave behind. Sadly, this would not be
'The Crown Prince of Reggae's first release. Debut release duties would
be claimed by Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One, with 'No Man Is An
Island.'
Born February 1, 1957 Dennis Emanuel Brown's singing career began at
age 9, eventually becoming a member of Byron Lee's Dragonaire's at age
12. His solo recordings would come a year later in 1970. His entire
career would span 4 decades, recording 78 albums, and helping pioneer
the 'Lover's Rock' style of Reggae. Dennis' voice would gain him the
status of being Bob Marley's favorite singer. In turn, Marley titled
Brown, 'The Crown Prince of Reggae.'
In addition to having recorded with legendary producers like Derrick
Harriot and Coxsone Dodd, Dennis Brown also worked for such Reggae
luminaries as Winston (Niney) Holness, Joe Gibbs, Herman Chin-Loy,
Sidney Crooks, Prince Buster, Randy's, Phil Pratt, GG Ranglin, Big
Youth, Junior Reid, Black Scorpio, Michael Bennett, Clive Hunt and
Willie Lindo, Errol Thompson, Sly & Robbie, Gussie Clarke, Tad
Dawkins, Trevor Bow, Bunny Lee and Delroy Wright.
July 1, 1999 Dennis Emanuel Brown died of pnuemonia. He is survived by a wife and 13 children.
