Jay Dee A.K.A. J. Dilla
Detroit Hip
Hop producer J-Dilla/Jay Dee, died February 10th, 2006. His death has
been suggested to be related to kidney problems, which he has been
enuring since 2004.
Born James Yancey, J-Dilla started his professional career as a member
of A Tribe Called Quest's Ummah production team, in the mid 90's. He
went on to produce Pharcyde's "Labcabincalifornia" album, Common's
"Like Water for Chocolate" and "Electric Circus" albums, as well as
several Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, and Slum Village productions among
others. He signed with Stones Throw Records in 2003 and released, with
Madlib, Jaylib's "Champion Sound" album.
In 2004, Yancey was hospitalized for a ruptured kidney, due to
malnutrition. He was also hospitalized during 2005, amid rumors of
having died. At the time of his death, Dilla was finishing up a world
tour, in which there were dates he performed from a wheelchair.
