Johnnie Cochran
Life's rather
unfortunate when you're forever recognized for being a prominent member
of the "Dream Team," legal defense for the OJ Simpson trial when he was
accused of murdering his ex-wife. Still since you were able to get a
"not guilty" verdict, when so many people believed OJ did it... You
have to pretty much be damn nice like that!
This (in)famou lawyer was born Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. on October 27,
1938. He graduated UCLA with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in
1959. Three years later, he'd earn his Juris Doctorate from Jesuit
Loyola Law School (Loyoala Marymount University's law school). 1963,
after passing the BAR he'd take a job as deputy city attorney within
LA's criminal division. By '65 he'd help open the private practice of
Cochran, Atkins & Evans. Mr. Cochran made a career of
litigating high-profile police brutality cases by the late 70s. '78 he
joined the LA County District Attorney's Office, only to return to
private practice 5 years later. Cochran would also start the
multi-state Cochran Law Firm, with offices in Alabama, California,
Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New York,
Tennessee, Texas and Washington, D.C.
Among Johnnie's more notable cases (aside obviously from the OJ case),
he represented P-Diddy on gun and bribery charges, Michael Jackson in a
1993 child molestation case, Todd Bridges, Jim Brown, Tupac Shakur, and
Snoop Doggy Dogg. Cochran would also successfully represent Abner
Louima during his case against the NYPD on charges of being raped and
sodomized in a precint house by officers. Louima was awarded $8.75
million, the largest police brutality settlement in NYC history.
I could mention a few of the millions of times Johnnie's been parodied
in the media, which he took in stride... but I'm sure you already know
every single last one.
March 29, 2005 Johnnie L. Cochran died of an inoperable brain tumor.
Post-mortum his old middle school, Mount Vernon Middle School, was
renamed Johnnie L. Cochran Middle School, by the L.A. Unified School
District.
