Justo Faison

It's undeniable that Hip Hop came into being, up in the Bronx, because of DJs. DJs were the foundation of any jam, DJs cut breakbeats, looping them end to end, enabling B-Boy/B-Girls to get busy in the circle. At a certain point in time, DJs faded from the spotlight. They were relegated to just touring with rap groups (though, not always a member of any group), DJin in clubs, or slangin mixtapes. Around 1996 a man decided it was time to give recognition to those slanging mixtapes. Thusly, the Mixtape Awards were born.

The man behind the creation of the Mixtape Awards was Justo Faison. Justo pretty much championed DJin back into Hip Hop. DJs had been slowly moving away from Hip Hop via "turntablism."  Let's face it the average consumer can't handle turtablism. The average consumer is what Hip Hop's marketed to now. In light of this, Mr Faison has been known for managing DJs free of charge to focus them back into the Hip Hop money making machine in the form of a "mixtape." In March of 2005 he released the DVD, "Justo Presents: The Mixtape Documentary."

May 14, 2005 Justo Faison died in a car acident on the way from Richmond, VA to an unknown locale.
