Khalid Abdul Muhammed
Born Harold
Moore, Jr. on Jauary 12th, 1948 in Houston, TX the second of six
children to Harold Moore Sr. and Lottie B. Moore would be raised by his
aunt Momma Carrie Moore Vann. "Butch" as he was known by family, excell
academically going on to become an esteemed member Stagecrafters, at
Phyllis Wheatley High School, developing debate and drama skills. He
also became president of the Houston Methodist Youth Fellowship, was
star quarterback and team captain of his High School football team, an
eagle Scout, as well as class officer.
After High School, Muhammad would attend Dillard University in
Louisana, on scholarship, persuing a degree in Theological studies.
While attending Dillard Univ., he ministered at Sloan Memorial
Methodist Church. Butch's days at Dillard would aslo be the first time
he ever heard Minister Louis Farrahkan. Upon hearing Minister Karrahkan
speak, Harold Moore, Jr. would join the Nation of Islam, changing his
name to Brother Harold X, under the leadership of Elijah Muhammed. Not
long afterwards, Harold X would become the top recruiter in the south
for the Black Muslims. Khalid would continue his studies graduating
from Pepperdine University, recieving an academic fellowship and
matriculating Harvard, Yale, and Columbia Universities, as well.
1975, around the time of Elijah Muhammed's death, Dr. Malik Rushaddin
(as Khalid Muhammad was then known) travelled throughout Africa
training in revolutionary movements, with a focus on freeing South
Africa from apartheid. As Minister Farrahkan would decide to rebuild
the Nation of Islam, in 1978, Khalid would serve as western regional
minister of the Nation of Islam and leader of Mosque ..27. Minister
Louis Farrakhan would rename Dr. Malik Rushaddin, in 1983, Khalid Abdul
Muhammad, after the Islamic general and follower of the Prophet
Muhammad, Khalid Ibn Walid. Soon afterwards, Khalid Abdul Muhammad was
appointed Supreme Captain over the Fruit of Islam. In 1985 he'd be
appointed National Spokesman and Representative of Minister Louis
Farrakhan, following Farrakhan and Malik El Shabazz's(Malcolm X)
footsteps. Muhammad would serve as Southern Regional Minister, minister
of Mosque ..7 in Harlem, and as National Assistant. After his highly
controversial lecture at Kean College, November 23, 1993, Khalid was
stripped of his position as National Spokesman of the Nation of Islam.
May 29th,1994 an attempt on his life would be made, but Khalid Abdul
Muhammad survived. He'd go on to lead the New Black Panther Party of
Self-Defense, pushing KKK members out of Jasper, TX in 1998. September
5th, 1998 he also convened the Million Youth March down Malcolm X Blvd.
in Harlem, NYC. February 17, 2001 Khalid Abdul Muhammad died of a brain
aneurysm in Atlanta, GA.
The memory of Khalid Abdul Muhammad will live on through his being
sampled by Hip Hop artists such as 2pac Shakur, Ice Cube, Sista
Souljah, X-Clan, Public Enemy, Scarface, Shaquille O'Neill, Erykah
Badu, Lauren Hill, Dead Prez, Capone N' Noreaga and the Black Lyrical
Terrorist as well as thorugh his creation of the New African Cultural
Holiday of Gye Nyame (an alternative to Thanksgiving).
