Left Eye
"If the left
eye is the right eye..then the right eye is the left eye..." That
would an explanation of Philadelphia native(born May 27, 1971), Lisa
Nichole Lopes' stage name of "Left-Eye". A moniker she'd
popularize as the MC member of the R-n-B/Hip-Hop hybrid group,
TLC. Lisa's rise to stardom began as the group, with groupmates
T-Boz and Chili, had their first hit "Ain't too proud to beg" blowing
up on MTV back in the early 90's. The group would have numerous
hits like "Creep", "Waterfalls", and "No Scrubs", though they would all
file for bankruptcy due to poor royalties.
As an individual, Lisa's talent was unending. She was an
accomplished pianist, performing Beethoven during her solo performance
spot on TLC headline tours. Guested as an MC on numerous singles
of other artists, such as Method Man's "Judgement Day" album, Spice
Girl Melanie C's "Never be the same again", Donell Jones' "U know
what's up", singing the song "Space Cowboy" with NSYNC on one of thier
albums, and Toni Braxton's "Gimme Some".
She hosted MTV's "The Cut", an American Idol precursor, and discovered
third place winning Anastacia, whom she aided in getting signed to a
record deal. Ms. Lopes also discovered the group Blaque and got
them signed to Columbia records.
Left-Eye's debut solo album, Supernova, was originally supposed to be
released around the 10th anniversary of her father's death.
Apparently, Arista records pushed teh release date back and eventually
shelved the US release altogether. The copies sold in the US were
imports from the UK and Japan, due to popular demand of the
album. As a result Lisa cut all ties to Arista records, outside
of the group deal for TLC, and signed to Tha Row (re-incarnatd Deathrow
Records).
Everyone probably remembers Left-Eye's arrest and conviction for
burning down her then boyfriend Andre Rison, ex-Atlanta Falcon's pro
football star, house after a heated argument between the two.
Known for her temper, Lisa would eventually begin a journey of
spiritual reawakening, as a means to calm her temper, deal with past
demons, etc... This journey would take her to Honduras, on
missionary work which she loved to death...literally. April 25,
2002 Lisa Nicole "Left-Eye" Lopes would die in a car accident in
Honduras.
