Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead." Though, not as well known as other parts of his "I have a Dream" speech, These words are much more poignant to the spirit of one of America's greatest leaders during the civil rights momvement. Further more, this man's words are even more important to maintaining and continuing the on-going struggle of people within today's society. That man is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The nature of these bios/blurbs will never this man justice, as space just cannot be availed with numerous pages on hisself alone. This can only be a very sparse overview at best. Please do take time to research him and read more in depth, as Dr. King deserves that respect.

Born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, GA, to Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King and growing up at 501Auburn Avenue, King would go on to graduate from Morehouse College. While at Morehouse he became a prominent member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. While working towards his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, King would be mentored in civil rights activism by Morehouse President Benjamin Mays. By 1951 King would graduate with a Bachelor of Divinity from Crozer Theological Seminary, in Chester, PA. Moving ever forward, he'd aquire his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology, from Boston University around 1955. Controversy surrounded his Doctoral studies, as question of whether he wrote certain papers or not came up, due to many publications being actually pulled from his speeches.

Dr. King also met his future wife Coretta while in Boston. They'd marry at her parents home in Marion, AL on June 18, 1953. They'd eventually have four children, all of whom followed Dr. King's footsteps in becoming political activists, in their own rights.

The same year as Dr. and Mrs. King's wedding, Martin would become Pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, in Montgomery, AL. Two years later he'd lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, sparked off by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat at thefront of the bus, to a white person. The boycott would last 381 to 382 days, depending if you counted the leap year status of 1956. A year later, Dr. King helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(SCLC). Dr. King's style of protest was "non-violent civil disobedience" via marches, sit-ins, voter registration, etc. All of his work would culminate in the passing of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and The Voters Rights Act of 1965. Later King would turn his focus on the Vietnam War.

April 4, 1968 Dr. MAtrin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, TN.

Dr. Martin Luther King is perhaps most widely known for his "I have a dream" speech, delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the March on Washington, in 1963. This is the very speech from which I've pulled the quote of, "We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge taht we shall always march ahead". This is the legacy he has willed to us all, as we move onward towards the future.
