Mix Master Spade
Compton,CA was
introduced to Hip Hop by Mixmaster Spade. The self professed "OG
Compton Godfather of Rap" actually got his start while going to school
in NYC around 1977 or 1978. It was there that he was first taught how
to scratch and cut on turntables. Upon returning to Compton, his
Grandmother gave him money to buy turntables and stuff, but he used to
money instead to buy clothes, since he noticed nobody in LA was into
Hip Hop at the time. He did pick up poppin-n-lockin while in Compton
and after several back-n-forth trips to NY, he saw a DJ battle between
Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, Jazzy, Afrika Bambatta, and
others. In that battle he witnessed Grandmaster Flash scratching to a
drum-machine. Enthralled with his style, Spade wanted to get back into
DJin. Once back in Compton he found some freinds who were trying to DJ
and he blew them away by showing them how to really do it. This led to
him making tapes and selling the tapes around his area, on the corner,
to drug dealers, etc.. to being on Toddy T's "Batterram" in 1984.
Mixmaster Spade died due to complications from a motorcycle wreck March 15th 2005.
