Notorious B.I.G
May 21,
1972 is a sacred day for all Hip Hop and Brooklyn, NYC, as well. This
would be the day Christopher George Latore Wallace AKA Notorious
B.I.G./Biggie Smalls would begin to grace the world with his being.
Born to Jamaican-born parents Voletta Wallace and George Latore, Biggie
grew up rather comfortably in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Though, he was raised
in a single-parent household, due to his father, a smalltime Jamaican
politician, abandoning them when Biggie was only two. Young Christopher
excelled academically, regularly making the honor-roll. At age 17, he
dropped out of school and persued a small career selling crack,
eventually ending up in Virginia.
A demo tape, put together with DJ Mister Cee, landed in
Sean "Puffy" Combs' hands. Highly impressed, Combs arranged for a
meeting with Biggie and Mister Cee. Puffy and Biggie became friends
rather quickly. 1992 saw them both rhyming on the remix of Supercat's
"Dolly My Baby". 1993 would be Biggie's first single, "Party and
Bullshit", on the "Who's the Man" soundtrack. A verse on Mary J.
Blige's "Real Love" remix would be Biggie's second commercial
appearance. Within the same year, he'd appear on "One Million Strong"
doing a song with Tupac and Dramacydal titled, "Runnin", also appearing
on Trapp's "Stop the Gunfight" album on the track "Be the Realist" with
Tupac and Trapp. A remix of "Runnin" titled "Stop the Gunfight" would
also be on the same album. 1994, Juicy is released as a single.
Biggie's debut album, "Ready to die" would follow, as well.
1995: Biggie introduces the world to Junior M.A.F.I.A., with the album
"Conspiracy". '94 also brought Junior MAFIA crewmates, Lil Kim and Lil
Cease, to the limelight. This very same year,Biggie's single "One More
Chance" debuted at #5, tying Michael Jackson's "Scream/Childhood" for
the highest chart debut of a single, ever. This feat has since been
reclaimed by Michael Jackson's "You are not alone", which debuted at
#1. "One More Chance" would go on to become a certified platinum hit.
By the end of the year, Biggie would be named "Lyricist of the Year" by
The Source Magazine and dubbed, by many, "King of New York" aka "Frank
White"(after the movie and character of the same names).
Tupac and Biggie became friends early on. The friendship soured when
Tupac was shot outside Electric Lady Studios (originally owned by Jimi
Hendrix) and blamed the Badboy Records camp for the shooting. From
there, Tupac verbally attacked Biggie in several songs. Yet, Biggie
maintained innocense and never responded. Biggie maintained love for
Tupac even after Tupac's murder on September 13th, 1996. Six months
later, Christopher George Latore Wallace would be violently murdered,
survived by his mother Voletta, his wife Faith Evans, thier son, and
his daughter from a relationship prior to Fatih Evans.
