Paul Winfield


    Paul Edward Winfield Television Actor, Film Actor..was born May 22, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA. His TV acting career started with an Episode of Perry Mason (The case of the runaway racer) in 1965. Mr. Winfield would not become more widely known until his role as Paul Cameron, opposite Diahann Carroll, in the 1968-1971 series "Julia". A series of importance, in that it was the first time ever a series featured an African American woman in the starring role. Further, the role was a NON-STEREOTYPICAL role for a black woman, as well.

    Winfield's role as "the dignified sharecropper" in 1972's Sounder, earned him a nomination for the Best Actor Academy Award. He would be only the third African American ever to have recieved such nomination. Paul's popularity would continue to grow with roles such as Dr. King in the mini-sereis "King", "Roots: The Next Generation," "Queen: The Story of an American Family" and "Scarlett". Much of Paul Winfield's fanbase would actually be for his memorable roles in science fiction programs (both on Televison and in Movies). Roles such as Lt. Traxler in "Terminator," Captain Clark Terrell in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and General Franklin on "Babylon 5." Voice-over work was also a part of Mr Winfield's career, providing voices for cartoons like "Batman Beyond," "The Magic School Bus," "The Simpsons," and "Spider-man." At the time of his death, he was also narrating the "City Confidential" series on A&E Channel.

    Though acting took up the bulk of his life, Winfield also bred pugs at his home in Los Angeles, CA.

    Paul Edward Winfield died March 7th, 2004 of a heart attack, predeceased by his life partner, architect Charles Gillan Jr.
