Proof
Rather than
dwell on another senseless death by shooting within Hip Hop, let's go
back to the mid-90s. Back to when Maurice Malone, founder and designer
of one-time Hip Hop fashion label Maurice Malone Designs, still owned
and operated Detroit's The Hip Hop Shop. A place where Hip Hop
fashions, mixtapes, magazines were all sold... a place that was also
the site of a weekly open-mic freestyle battle, hosted by Deshaun
"Proof" Holton.
These battles at the Hip Hop Shop were where future Detroit stars
Eminem, the other members of D12, Royce da 5-9, Slum Village, and
others all got their weight up. Around this time, Tommy Boy Records was
also considering signing him. The contract never came through... a few
years later Eminem's signing to Aftermath would bring about better
fortunes.
Many say it was Proof's absolute loyalty and support that brought
Eminem to the world. The loss of a friendship like that is definitely
weighing in on Em's heart right now. Proof was known for always being
"real," always having a great time anywhere, always having
energy...just always something.
April 11, 2006 Proof was shot outside of a club on 8-Mile, that was
operating illegally afterhours. There are claims that he shot a person
he was arguing with first, a 35-year old Army vet. The facts aren't all
in at this moment, though. The only truth is that two men were
senselessy shot outside of that club... One of them an MC who will be
dearly missed as a member of D12, missed for his impeccable freestyle
battle skills, missed for his 100% loyalty and friendship.
